Close College Drive to Cars
Lately, when I’ve been walking on campus, I’ve noticed a lot of car traffic on College Drive. Since this road passes right through the center of campus, these cars create a noisy disruption of the otherwise peaceful campus atmosphere. I think the university should close College Drive to cars and convert it into a walkway for pedestrians and bicycle riders. This would help reduce the traffic problem, since cars would use alternate routes instead. And eliminating cars from College Drive would also reduce the risk of both pedestrian and bike accidents.
Sincerely,
David Thompson

Fixed—Action Patterns
Many animals exhibit certain patterns of behavior that are built into the animal’s nervous system. These innate behaviors are triggered by a specific stimulus and occur in the same way every time. The response to the stimulus is automatic, like a reflex. That is, the animal instinctive& knows how to perform these actions, known as fixed—action patterns, or FAP. FAP’s involve highly structured, predictable actions in response to a specific stimulus. Furthermore, the animal cannot stop itself from performing the FAP once the action has been set in motion. FAP’s are specific to a given species and are exhibited by all members of that species.
Use the examples of the sticker back fish and the gray lag goose mentioned in the lecture to explain the principle of fixed action patterns.
