Task1
Your university wants to introduce a new policy: all students will now be required to do volunteer work in the local community, such as helping out in elementary schools or cleaning the parks. Do you agree or disagree with this policy? Give specific reasons to support your opinion.
Task2
Reading:
Winter Break Courses
Students often stay on campus during the summer to take an extra course or two. Starting this year, students will also have the option of taking courses during the winter break. According to the dean of students, the winter course option will let students take an extra course without having to give up summer relaxation or job opportunities. “This way, students will have more flexibility with how they choose to complete their course requirements,”noted Dean Murphy. Although in the past all student dormitories were closed during the winter break, some dormitories will now remain open and available for students without additional cost to them.
The man expresses his opinion about the plan described in the article. Briefly summarize the plan. Then state his opinion about the plan and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.
Task3
Reading:
Aposematic Sound
Certain prey animals produce toxic chemicals in their bodies, which may make them inedible or bad-tasting. This can help protect these prey animals from predators, but it is most effective if potential predators know in advance that the prey animals are toxic, so they will not even try to eat them. Thus, some prey animals have evolved ways of signaling their toxicity to predators-sometimes by making sounds. This is known as aposematic sound. A predator that is unfamiliar with the warning signal will attack the prey, but once it learns to associate the sounds with a bad taste, it will avoid the prey.
Explain how the example in the lecture illustrates the concept of aposematic sound.
Task4
Using the professor’s points and examples, summarize the lecture about companies with an open-door policy.
