Kintsugi, an ancient Japanese art, transforms broken pottery into objects of beauty by highlighting, not hiding, their cracks. Artisans use lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum to repair fractures, creating pieces that often become more valued than their original form.
Originating in the late fifteenth century, kintsugi reflects the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which honors imperfection and transience. Its message extends beyond ceramics, inspiring personal growth and resilience by advising people to embrace flaws as part of life’s narrative. Rather than viewing damage as failure, kintsugi reframes it as transformation, symbolizing strength, authenticity, and renewal in a perfection-driven world.
Today, workshops and studios worldwide teach both its technical craft and its profound philosophy, offering learners not only artistic skills but insights into acceptance, individuality, and creative expression. Kintsugi stands as a timeless reminder that beauty lies in uniqueness and in the stories our “cracks” reveal, an idea that applies to academic life and beyond.
23
According to the article, what philosophical perspective does kintsugi promote?
Minimalism, emphasizing simplicity and the elimination of excess
Ethics, focusing on honor and discipline in craftsmanship
Humility, valuing imperfection and the transient nature of life
Purity, highlighting spiritual cleanliness and ritual renewal
24
What does the article suggest about the symbolic meaning of repairing pottery with precious metals?
Wealth and luxury are essential for authentic art.
Flaws can be turned into sources of value and beauty.
Artisans prioritize aesthetics over philosophical significance.
Objects lose their cultural value when restored with cheap materials.
25
Why does the author of the article mention “a perfection-driven world”?
To argue that modern society has completely abandoned traditional art forms
To suggest that flawless craftsmanship is the goal of contemporary design
To contrast kintsugi’s philosophical message with a common present-day attitude
To explain why kintsugi techniques are rarely used in professional pottery today

Unveiling Earth’s Core
Geophysicists have long been intrigued by Earth’s core (the center of Earth). When earthquakes occur, they send seismic waves through the planet, offering rare glimpses into this mysterious world. Interestingly, these waves sometimes slow down in unexpected ways, suggesting that the core’s makeup may be more complex than just iron and nickel as previously believed. Some scientists suggest it might not be entirely solid, possibly containing molten layers or unusual elements that create a unique state of matter.
Advanced computer models now depict the core not as a homogeneous sphere, but as a layered structure with distinct regions. These models also propose phenomena like super-rotation—where the inner core (the inner part of Earth’s core) spins slightly faster than the rest of the planet—and directional differences in wave behavior, known as anisotropies. Collectively, these findings portray a core in constant motion.
But is this picture complete? Some researchers argue that these models rely on overly simplified assumptions. Truly understanding the inner core demands cutting-edge technology and fresh perspectives. The limitations of current theories remind us that the deeper we explore planetary science, the more we challenge our understanding of it.
31
Why does the author discuss earthquakes in paragraph 1?
To demonstrate the fascination of geophysicists with Earth’s core
To explain one way scientists gain insights into Earth’s core
To highlight the destructive effects of seismic waves on Earth’s core
To challenge the idea that Earth’s core is a mysterious world
32
Why might seismic waves slow down when passing through Earth’s core?
Because of the solid nature of the core
Because of the presence of iron and nickel
Because of the possible presence of molten layers or unusual elements
Because of the strength of the elements that make up the core
33
The word “Collectively” in the passage is closest in meaning to
generally
together

interestingly
34
Advanced computer models suggest all of the following about Earth’s core EXCEPT:
Earth’s core has different layers.
The inner part of Earth’s core rotates a little faster than other parts of Earth do.
Wave behavior in Earth’s core shows directional differences.
The super-rotation of Earth’s core is caused by anisotropies.
35
Identify the sentence in paragraph 3 that describes a specific criticism of computer models of the inner core. Select the sentence to make your choice.

Evolution of Chatbots
The evolution of chatbots has revolutionized human-computer interaction. Early chatbots, like ELIZA, developed in the 1960s, followed simple scripts to mimic conversation. However, these early models often failed to understand context, making interactions feel artificial.
Recent advancements in natural language processing (NLP) have significantly improved chatbot capabilities. NLP allows chatbots to interpret and generate human-like responses by understanding context and nuances. This development has enabled chatbots to handle complex queries, provide customer support, and even engage in small talk.
The latest iterations employ generative artificial intelligence (AI) embedded in chatbot systems that train on massive amounts of language data. Their ability to generate coherent and contextually accurate responses has set a new standard for chatbots. Despite these advancements, ensuring that chatbots do not generate harmful or biased content remains a significant concern. According to researchers, the vast amount of data used to train these models can sometimes reflect societal biases, leading to unintended output in chatbot interactions.
Moreover, integrating emotional intelligence into chatbots is an ongoing challenge. Emotional intelligence enables chatbots to recognize and respond appropriately to users’ emotions, enhancing the user experience. Researchers are exploring various methods, such as sentiment analysis, to address this issue.
11
The word “mimic” in the passage is closest in meaning to
imitate
produce
hold
control
12
According to the passage, what was a limitation of early chatbots like ELIZA?
They could not be programmed to follow conversational scripts.

Professor Diaz
We often hear about environmental problems like air pollution from factories, plastic waste in oceans, and forests being cut down for agriculture. People are trying different solutions: switching from coal and oil to solar and wind energy, teaching communities about recycling and conservation, or developing new technologies to clean contaminated water and soil. Which of these approaches do you think would produce the fastest, most measurable improvements to environmental problems? Why?
Paul
I believe that switching from coal and oil to solar and wind energy sources would produce the fastest environmental improvements. Power plants that burn coal create most of the air pollution and carbon emissions that cause climate change, so replacing them with clean energy would immediately reduce harmful gases entering the atmosphere and improve air quality in cities.
Kelly
In my opinion, teaching communities about recycling, conservation, and environmental protection produces the most lasting improvements. When people understand how their daily choices affect air and water quality, they change their purchasing habits, support environmental policies, and teach these practices to their children, creating long-term behavioral changes across entire communities.

Listen to a talk on a science podcast.
Listen to a talk on a science podcast.
Let’s move on in our renewable energy series to discuss solar power, which is arguably the most abundant resource available.
Solar power takes energy from the sun’s rays and converts it to electricity or heat.
The primary technology for this is solar panels made up of photovoltaic cells, which generate an electric current when sunlight hits them.
The advantages of solar power are well known, and the most important may be the fact that it produces zero harmful pollutants.
Any industrial endeavor will produce carbon dioxide in one way or another, and manufacturing solar panels itself requires energy sourced from fossil fuels.
But on the whole, the industry has a much lower carbon footprint than coal or natural gas, and this makes it key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Another advantage, and one we don’t talk about enough, is that solar power can provide energy access in remote and underserved areas, far from the grid.
So what are the disadvantages?
Solar panel efficiency is affected by cloud cover and other weather, which of course reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the panels.
That said, innovations in battery storage systems do allow for the storage of solar energy for use during non-sunny periods.
Panel lifespan is quite good at 25 to 30 years, but improvements in efficiency are paradoxically driving panels to be replaced much earlier than that, so waste is increasing faster than expected.
This is a problem because recycling them is expensive, and most panels end up in landfills.

Listen to a talk in a music appreciation class.
Listen to a talk in a music appreciation class.
Most wind instruments, which are played by blowing into them, went through lots of modifications before becoming the standardized instruments we see and hear today.
Now, most brass instruments, like the trumpet and trombone, underwent many centuries of refinement before being standardized.
But the tuba only took about 180 years to reach its current form.
That’s because, through centuries, composers and inventors wanted an ideal bass instrument to play those really low notes.
Rather than tinker with an instrument they didn’t love, they’d discard it and start again.
So the tuba doesn’t really have a clear ancestor, more a series of untyped.
An early example was the serpent.
The serpent was made of a wooden tube, bent into the shape of, well, a serpent.
The letter S.
Problem was, it didn’t sound great.
The wooden tube was too wide, which caused problems with intonation, meaning it was hard to hit the right notes.
Imagine a choir of voices accompanied by a serpent, booming along out of tune.
Ouch.
Well, so long, serpent.
And hello, ophiclide.
The ophiclide’s main advantage was that it was made of brass.
The brass construction made its intonation much better.
The ophiclide became much more popular than the serpent.
The composer Burkard, who was the composer, said, Um, Berlioz used it in some famous pieces.
But still, the ophiclide wasn’t the answer.
Its pitch range was pretty narrow, and composers wanted something that could play lower notes.
Q8:
原文定位:文章开头提到“Most wind instruments… went through lots of modifications… But the tuba only took about 180 years to reach its current form.”
原文定位:原文提到“Now, most brass instruments, like the trumpet and trombone, underwent many centuries of refinement before being standardized.”
A. They have clear ancestors to their modern versions.
B. They are often made of materials other than brass.
C. They do not yet have standardized versions.
D. They are not played in a similar way to the tuba.
原文定位:原文中提到“The wooden tube was too wide, which caused problems with intonation, meaning it was hard to hit the right notes.”
与原文“too wide”和“problems with intonation”一致,正确。
原文定位:提到Berlioz的句子是“The composer Burkard, who was the composer, said, Um, Berlioz used it in some famous pieces.”
A. 错误。
Berlioz使用ophicleide表明它被广泛接受,符合“became much more popular”。

(man) When I was growing up, Pluto was known as the ninth planet in our solar system. Alas, Pluto was demoted to dwarf planet status in 2006, and not only because it’s so small, maybe half the width of the United States. It’s mainly because in 2006, it was decided that planets had to meet three criteria.
They had to orbit the Sun and be round in shape, check and check. But they also had to be the main object in their orbit, which, well, Pluto is in the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is a region in the far outer reaches of the solar system with many other bodies that orbit the Sun, so Pluto lost its planet status as a result. Many scientists dismissed Pluto as just a ball of ice anyway.
However, about ten years later, the New Horizons spacecraft went back new images and data showing that Pluto is far more complex than previously thought. We’re talking volcanoes, dunes. I mean, get this. Pluto has a deep basic with three types of ice, and New Horizons’ images suggest there’s convection in the basin of ice. With convection warmer ice rises to the surface, then cools and sinks at the edge of the basin. So, the surface is continuously rejuvenating, renewing itself. Moreover, under the basin of ice, there may be something astonishing: a saltwater ocean. Life could exist there. This means many neighboring bodies in the Kuiper Belt could also have oceans and potentially be habitable.
Q12:
原文定位:原文提到“Pluto is in the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is a region… with many other bodies that orbit the Sun, so Pluto lost its planet status as a result.”
A. To explain why Pluto’s status changed
B. To illustrate Pluto’s size
C. To emphasize how far Pluto is from the Sun
D. To make a point about Pluto’s shape
原文定位:听力中提到“the New Horizons spacecraft went back new images and data showing that Pluto is far more complex than previously thought. We’re talking volcanoes, dunes…”,说明新数据揭示了冥王星比之前认为的更多样化。
选项分析:
A. 它比之前认为有更长的轨道。听力未提及轨道长度变化。
B. 它比之前认为有更多样化的特征。与原文“far more complex”一致,正确。
C. 它比之前认为在过去更大。听力未提及大小变化。
D. 它比之前认为有更多的降雨。听力未提及降雨。
Q14:
正确答案:C
原文定位:原文提到“With convection warmer ice rises to the surface, then cools and sinks at the edge of the basin. So, the surface is continuously rejuvenating, renewing itself.”
Q15:
原文定位:文章结尾部分提到“under the basin of ice, there may be something astonishing: a saltwater ocean. Life could exist there. This means many neighboring bodies in the Kuiper Belt could also have oceans and potentially be habitable.”
A. Pluto orbits closer to the Sun than expected. B. A huge amount of salt exists throughout Pluto. C. Objects in the Kuiper Belt could support life. D. Pluto’s ice might be melting.

Subject: Recent Laptop Purchase
Dear Customer Service,
I recently purchased a new laptop from your store, and I am generally satisfied with its sleek design and fast processing speed. However, I have noticed some performance issues that concern me. Specifically, the laptop frequently freezes when running multiple applications, and the battery drains quickly, lasting only about two hours on a full charge.
To resolve this, I would appreciate it if you could provide a replacement unit or offer a repair service. If neither is possible, I kindly request a full refund. Please let me know the next steps.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,

I agree with Kelly that education fosters lasting change. While renewable energy is vital, its adoption often faces political and economic hurdles, slowing implementation. In contrast, community-based education can yield rapid results. For example, in Japan, school recycling programs taught children to sort waste meticulously, leading to a dramatic increase in recycling rates within a year. Similarly, in Rwanda, a nationwide ban on plastic bags succeeded because citizens were educated about the environmental harm and alternatives. These initiatives show that when people understand the impact of their actions, they change behavior quickly, reducing waste and pollution at the source. Education also empowers communities to advocate for stronger environmental policies, creating a ripple effect that accelerates progress across multiple environmental issues.

Yes, I have a small garden on my balcony where I grow herbs like basil and mint, as well as some succulents. I spend about 20 minutes each morning watering and checking the plants, and a bit more time on weekends for pruning and repotting. It’s a relaxing routine that helps me start my day calmly. I find gardening rewarding because I can see the plants grow and even use the herbs in cooking. It also connects me with nature despite living in the city.
9
I find vertical gardens fascinating because they turn bare walls into living art. I saw one in a city park, with ferns and flowering vines cascading down. It’s appealing because it maximizes limited space and improves air quality. Also, herb gardens are practical and lovely. My neighbor grows basil and mint, which smell wonderful and are used in cooking. These gardens show how plants can blend beauty with function, making urban life greener and more sustainable.
10
I think one major challenge is dealing with pests and diseases. Insects like aphids or fungal infections can quickly damage plants if not managed properly. Another issue is maintaining the right soil conditions, such as pH balance and nutrients, which requires regular testing and amendments. Also, weather unpredictability, like unexpected frosts or droughts, can harm plants. Finally, time commitment is a challenge; gardens need consistent watering, weeding, and pruning, which can be demanding for busy individuals.
11
I strongly agree that gardening positively impacts mental health. First, it reduces stress by connecting us with nature, which lowers cortisol levels. Second, it provides a sense of accomplishment when plants thrive, boosting self-esteem. Finally, gardening encourages mindfulness, as focusing on tasks like watering or weeding helps clear the mind. These benefits collectively improve well-being, making gardening a valuable therapeutic activity.
