Yesterday, the university flipped the switch on its new nuclear research reactor in the basement of the Franklin Applied Energy Lab, turning the engineering quad into the hottest spot on campus—literally and figuratively. The reactor, about the size of a classroom, won’t charge cell phones or brew coffee; it’s built for neutron experiments, advanced materials research, and isotope production. “The launch of this laboratory will provide unparalleled opportunities for the university,” said Dr. Evelyn Pillai, project lead. While some students have expressed safety concerns, a university spokesperson assured the community that the reactor is safer than the chemistry labs most first-year students wander into. “Radiation levels outside the facility are lower than what you’d get on a cross-country flight,” said Dr. Pillai. Meanwhile, the Physics Club is planning a festive “Critical Mass Mixer” for Friday evening. The invitation features an atom whose colorful orbiting electrons are juggled by a mole.
