San Jose State University Student Association recently changed the policy regarding the use of cell phones in the library. Read the following announcement which appeared in the university newspaper.

Cell Phones in the Library

The San Jose State University Student Association has recently decided to lift the ban on cell phone usage in the university library. Beginning on October 1, cell phone usage will be allowed in all areas of the library. Students are still encouraged to turn their phones to silent mode or vibrate so as not to disturb other library patrons and students are reminded to be courteous to others by not speaking loudly or playing loud music on their phones. The Student Association is confident that by allowing cell phone usage in the library will help students stay connected with campus news and alerts in the event of an emergency.

Convergent Evolution

Convergent evolution describes the independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages. Convergent evolution creates related structures that have similar form or function, but that were not present in the last common ancestor of those groups. The recurrent evolution of flight is a classic example of convergent evolution. Flying insects, birds, and bats have all evolved the capacity of flight independently. They have “converged” on this useful trait.

Evolutionary convergence involves unrelated organisms living in similar environments but in different places can occur in relatively simple communities in which biological interactions are highly predictable and the resulting number of different ways of exploiting the environment are limited. Similar environments pose similar challenges to survival and reproduction, and those traits that enhance Darwinian fitness are selected for in each environment.

Explain convergent evolution and how the example used by the professor illustrates the concept.
