Aposematism
Aposematism describes a family of anti-predator adaptations where a warning signal is associated with the unprofitability of a prey item to potential predators. The warning signal may take the form of conspicuous colors, sounds, odors or other perceivable characteristics. Aposematic signals are beneficial for both the predator and prey, both of which avoid potential harm. The purpose of aposematism is to prevent attack by warning potential predators that the prey animal has defenses such as being unpalatable or poisonous. Aposematic coloration must be easy to detect, recall and associate with a defense. This allows predators to identify the animals from a longer distance away and allots more time to make a decision whether to attack or not, based on passed experiences with the prey.
