Task1

To promote academic success, your university is considering a new policy that would limit the number of hours per week that students can spend working at university jobs. Do you think this is a good idea? Explain why or why not, using specific examples and details in your response.

Task2

Reading

Overnight Guests Policy

In response to recent student complaints, the university is implementing a new policy on overnight guests in student housing. Starting next month, visiting friends or family members will not be able to stay in student dormitory rooms for more than three consecutive nights. Many students have complained that they are inconvenienced when their roommates have guests for a long period of time, and so the new policy is intended to address this problem and better ensure the comfort of roommates. A comprehensive list of the many hotels in the neighborhoods around campus will soon be posted on the university Web site so that students’ guests can easily find alternative accommodations.

The man expresses his opinion about the plan described in the article. Briefly summarize the plan. Then state his opinion about the plan and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

Task3

Reading:

Landmarking Behavior

Animals seeking to reproduce tend to search for mates in their immediate surroundings, since it is their natural habitat. However, researchers have observed that sometimes certain species of animals leave their local habitat and engage in landmarking behavior. Animals that exhibit this behavior temporarily travel to an easily identifiable geographic location, or landmark, such as a high point of elevation, to find mates. Landmarking behavior is most common when the population density of a species is low and there are fewer potential mates in the immediate local area. Even if conditions are unsuitable at the landmark, animals will still temporarily gather there since it increases their chances of finding a mate.

Explain how the example from the professor’s lecture illustrates the concept of landmarking behavior.

Task4

Using points and examples from the professor’s talk, explain why and how companies build bonds with their customers.
