Task1

Some people prefer to spend their free time with a group of friends. Others prefer to spend their free time with just one person at a time. Which do you prefer? Why?

Task2

Reading:

Student Vegetable Garden to Close

One exciting new development at the university last year was the decision to open a small garden in the field behind the student center, where students could reserve individual plots of land to grow vegetables. After giving it a try, however, the university has decided to close this garden. While many students signed up to use the garden, some haven’t yet started growing vegetables, and most are not maintaining their plots, so the area has become overgrown with weeds. After closing the garden the university plans to clear the area, plant grass, and add tables and benches so that students can benefit from using the outdoor space to study and eat lunch.

The man expresses his opinion about the plan described in the article. Briefly summarize the plan. Then state his opinion about the plan and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

Task3

Reading:

Co-extinction

In some extreme cases, when one organism within a natural habitat becomes extinct, this will cause another species to become extinct as well because it was so dependent on the other organism for its survival. This phenomenon is known as co-extinction. Co-extinction can occur when a species has a specific requirement for survival that can only be met by a certain other organism. Since it depends so heavily on the other organism for its survival, if that organism dies off, the dependent organism will eventually die off too.

Explain how the example from the professor’s lecture illustrates the concept of co-extinction.

Task4

Using points and examples from the lecture, explain two ways early photographers manipulated their photographs.
