Conversation1
Listen to a conversation. A: Have you tried using that new app our physics professor mentioned? I was going to download it, but then I figured I wouldn’t have time to figure out how to use it. B: I can totally show you. It’s not that bad, and it’s been helpful for our last couple of homework assignments. A: Great, I was planning to go to the tutoring canter for extra help. B: You probably won’t need to now. Here, I’ll show you where to get it. And I have the code the professor gave us for the free trial. A: I actually have that.
Conversation2
Listen to a conversation. A: Did you end up seeing that movie yesterday with your friend? B: Yes. It was a good way to spend some time with her. It was an afternoon showing and the place was practically empty. A: How was the movie? B: It was OK. There were lots of unexpected twists, but it was too
long. A: Should I see it? B: I’m not sure I’d pay money to see it in the theater. Just wait a few months and it will be out on streaming. A: That’s usually how
I watch movies these days anyway.
Conversation3
Listen to a conversation. A: So did you manage to get those tickets for the theatre? B: Yes, I got some great seats near the stage for Friday evening. A: That’s fantastic. What play did you say it is? B: It’s a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. A: Oh, that sounds interesting. B: I think so too. I read King Lear in high school, but I’ve never seen it performed and I find the idea of a modern adaptation really intriguing. I sure hope my sister does too. Announcement1
Listen to an announcement on a university radio station. Attention, students. Due to construction, we’ve had to temporarily reduce the number of
available parking spaces on campus. Because of this, the off campus shuttle will now begin running at 6:00 AM rather than 8:00 AM. If you are driving, please pay close attention to the postage signage and make sure that you are parking in your designated area. Student cars parked in faculty lots at any time will be ticketed or towed. Please visit the Parking Services website if
you need to pay a ticket.
Announcement2
Listen to a campus radio announcement. The due date for submitting photographs to the Campus Photography Contest is today at 3:00 PM. If you would like to enter but have not yet submitted a photograph, remember to
do so today. After all submissions are in, selected photography students will judge the photos and declare a winner. The winner’s name and winning photo will be printed in the campus newspaper, and all photographs entered will be posted on the university website next Wednesday.
Announcement3

listen to an announcement at a University Club meeting. I see we have a lot of new members here this evening. Tonight we’ll focus on getting to know each other, and starting next week we’ll be talking about some exciting new projects, including volunteering at local elementary schools, fundraising for local charities, and planting trees in City Park. I hope you’re as excited about giving back to the broader community around our university as I am. I’ll
start by telling you a bit about myself and then we’ll go around the room. Lecture1
Listen to a talk in a music class. Hip hop is one of the world’s most popular musical genres. I want to discuss a characteristic feature of this art form, sampling. Sampling refers to the reuse of a part of an existing song in a new composition.
Hip hop artists might write a song that uses part of a vocal track or a drum beat, or some other sound from an existing song. For example, the singer Beyonce’s 2003 hit Crazy in Love uses a melody from a 1970 release by the band The Shy Lights. Sampling was especially common in the early days of hip hop, before the landmark 1991 US District Court case Grand Upright Music Limited versus Warner Brothers Records Inc. The ruling in that case required artists to obtain permission to use samples in their recordings. Before that legal decision, sampling had been a relatively cheap and easy practice. It continued afterward, down to today, but in a more limited way. Critics often argue that sampling is a less creative approach
than traditional music making, but I’d respond that all art, especially music, is referential. In creating a new work, all artists borrow in one manner or another from existing works of art. Hip hop creativity comes in finding unusual sources or putting recognizable material into new contexts. But now I’d like to know what
you think. Let’s examine the Sonic collage that is Paul’s Boutique, the 1989 album from the Beastie Boys, which utilizes A remarkable number of samples.
Lecture2
Listen to a talk in an architecture class. Have you ever thought about how ancient concrete structures like Roman amphitheatres and aqueducts have managed to
last for thousands of years, while modern concrete buildings seem to fall apart and need replacing after just a few decades? For a long time, researchers thought the secret to Roman concrete’s durability was volcanic ash. That makes sense, since volcanic ash was a major ingredient, and it was explicitly described as such by architects and historians who were writing at the time. But it turns out the real secret was actually tiny chunks of calcium carbonate. These formed because the Romans used dry, quick lime in their mix instead of the way we make concrete today called Portland cement, where lime gets mixed with water first, then
blended with everything else. When cracks show up in Roman concrete and water gets in, those calcium carbonate bits react with the water and seal up the cracks.
So the concrete basically heals itself, fixes the cracks, and gets stronger over time. Funny thing is, researchers have noticed these chunks in Roman concrete for ages, but they just figured they were a production floor, like someone didn’t mix the ingredients well enough. Anyway, considering how short lived modern concrete is,

and the fact that making it is bad for the environment, it’s pretty exciting to think we might be able to use some of these ancient Roman tricks in future construction. Module2:
