Indirect Defense
Plants have various defenses against insects that will attack and try to eat them.Some plants have defenses that directly protect them from attack,but other plants use an indirect defense strategy,in which they rely on other organisms to defend them.Plants that exhibit this have evolved over time to send signals to other organisms when they are attacked;these other organisms then respond in a way that protects the plant from attack.This relationship benefits the plants,of course,but it also benefits the organisms that defend them,because it helps these other organisms acquire resources for their survival that might otherwise be difficult to locate.
Explain how the example of tobacco plants illustrates the concept of indirect defense.
