Subject: Geology Field Trip Change

Dear class,

Our annual Intro to Geology field trip usually involves going to a nearby national park to identify various types of rocks common to this area. This year, however, we will go to the city’s new natural history museum instead. I think the museum will be a more valuable educational experience, since it will give us a chance to see many more kinds of rocks than we would see in the nature preserve. Also, the recent hot weather would make the hike through the nature reserve difficult, so the museum is a more pleasant alternative. Looking forward to our field trip!

Associational Defense

In order to survive, organisms have different ways to defend or protect themselves against threats. However, some species have weak defense mechanisms of their own and instead get protection by living near, or in association with, other organisms in the local environment. This type of protection, known as associational defense, occurs when one species is protected by the daily activities of a different species. Associational defense can greatly benefit the species receiving the protection, but it does not necessarily offer any advantage to the other, defending species.

Explain how the professor’s example involving coral and damselfish illustrates the concept of associational defense.
