Composite Signaling in Animals
The ability to communicate effectively with other individuals plays a critical role in the lives of all animals. Whether examining how individuals select a mate, convey information about nearby predators and danger, or maintain positions in a dominance hierarchy, communication systems are involved. Animals use a variety of sensory channels, or signal modalities, for communication. The three most prevalent types of signaling between individuals are visual, acoustic, and chemical signals. A composite signal is a combination of two or more signal types that combine to convey a meaning that is different from individual signals.
