The differences in aggressiveness cannot be therefore attributed to any external factors. It simply seems that the bonobos are less aggressive than chimpanzees by their very nature.
Second, observations of bonobos in the wild indicate that they live by a set of rules that protect smaller bonobos from larger ones. Among chimpanzees, the larger individuals attack and threaten the smaller chimpanzees. Among bonobos, the larger, stronger bonobos do not use their superior size and strength to attack smaller bonobos, even when there is competition for food and other resources.
Third, bonobos, for the most part, do not hunt and kill other animals, while chimpanzees do. In addition to eating a wide variety of nuts, fruits, and other plants, chimpanzees regularly hunt small mammals, including other monkey species. Bonobos, in contrast, hardly ever supplement their diet with meat. They are, practically speaking, peaceful vegetarians.
