The axolotl is a species of amphibian native to central Mexico. Although thousands of axolotls today are kept as pets, axolotls in their native habitat are increasingly threatened. Today, wild axolotls are limited to a number of canals and shrinking wetlands in Mexico City’s southern region. Surveys have revealed a steady decline in these wild axolotl populations. Unfortunately, the axolotl seems headed for extinction in its native habitat, as the causes of its decline seem likely to persist.
Habitat Loss
First, the axolotl’s habitat continues to be threatened by the growth of Mexico City’s human population. Between 1950 and 1975, Mexico City’s population more than tripled. To accommodate this human population growth, developers built on available wetlands and ended up ruining portions of the city’s canal system, considerably shrinking the axolotl’s habitat. As the city continues to grow, more of the axolotl’s habitat will likely be destroyed, bringing the species closer to extinction.
Invasive Fish
Second, invasive fish in the canals prey heavily on axolotls and are likely to continue to do so, contributing to the species’ decline. These non – native fish were deliberately brought to the canals to provide a ready source of protein for local residents who fish the canals. But because these fish have no natural predators in Mexico, their numbers have increased beyond what fishers would want to catch themselves. As the numbers of these non – native fish continue to grow, they will continue to prey on axolotls, further threatening the axolotl’s survival.
Artificial Fertilizers
Third, artificial fertilizers used on nearby farms manage to get into the canals, where they poison axolotls. Like many amphibians, axolotls breathe through their skin, which can make chemicals in the water that axolotls inhabit especially toxic for them. Since farmers rely on these fertilizers to grow more crops and compete with other farmers, these fertilizers will likely continue to be used and reduce axolotl numbers further.

With the widespread of technology, some people believe that long exposure to digital devices will have a bad influence on the brain development of children. Do you think technology has made children less creative than they were in the past? Why?
Andrew
With the rise of screen time and structured activities, children have less time to engage in imaginative play and exploration, which can limit their opportunities to exercise their creativity.

By providing access to a vast array of information and resources, technology can expose children to diverse viewpoints, cultures, and experiences that they might not encounter otherwise. This exposure is instrumental in fostering creativity in young minds.
