In 1846 a British naval expedition to the Arctic led by Sir John Franklin became trapped in ice north of Canada. Tragically, the crew was unable to withstand the harsh conditions, and all its members died. High levels of lead (a poisonous heavy metal) were found in the crew members’ bodies, suggesting that one of the factors that contributed to the crew members’ deaths was lead poisoning.
However, it is unclear how the poisoning occurred. Some people suggest that the lead came from canned food (food preserved in metal cans or containers), but that theory is improbable.
Lead Not in Contact with Food
Melted lead was used to seal food cans in the nineteenth century. However, it is difficult to believe that enough lead got into food inside the cans to cause poisoning. Melted lead was usually carefully applied to cans from the outside to seal the lids in place; very little if any lead came in contact with the food inside the cans. It is therefore unlikely that the food was contaminated by lead.
No Other Cases Reported
Second, many other British ships were supplied with canned food as well. Yet there are no reports that sailors on the other ships suffered from lead poisoning. Surely if the Franklin expedition’s canned food had caused lead poisoning in Franklin’s crew, the food supplies on other voyages would have caused the same problem.
A More Likely Source
Third, there is a more likely explanation for the source of lead poisoning. Franklin’s ships were equipped with unique water purification systems to create fresh water out of ocean salt water. Water purification systems were usually constructed with lead piping. Lead pipes are likely to have released some lead into the water, poisoning the crew members who drank the water.

Dr. Achebe
This week, we’ll be discussing challenging choices faced by administrations regarding the distribution of public funds. While certain services are indisputably vital and warrant financial backing from any government, the question arises: should governments prioritize supporting families of young people or families of elderly individuals?
Claire
Young people represent the future workforce and leaders of society. By supporting their families, governments can ensure the well – being and development of the next generation.
Paul
Elderly individuals have often contributed significantly to society throughout their lives. Prioritizing support for their families is a way of recognizing and honoring these contributions.
