Currently the United States government offers financial support to some artists and arts organizations. However, government money should not be used in this way. All government programs that fund the arts should be ended, and any government funding for the arts should be eliminated.

First

The funding of artists and arts organizations goes beyond the scope of the government’s legitimate functions. Of course there are certain things that the government can and should spend taxpayers’ money on: for instance, the government can and should spend taxpayers’ money on the military, as one of the government’s legitimate functions is to preserve the safety of its citizens. However, the government has no obligation to ensure that its citizens have entertainment, so it should not spend taxpayer dollars on arts funding.

Second

Government funding of the arts puts the government in the position of censoring artwork, and that’s always bad for a society. Censorship is the process of preventing artworks from reaching the public. This inevitably occurs when the government funds the arts because the government decides which projects to fund and which not to fund. Naturally, the government would be inclined to fund projects that reflect its political preferences and cultural prejudices. Thus artists whose ideas contradict those of the government would not receive funding, and such “subversive” art would be effectively repressed.

Third

Government funding for art and arts organizations is simply not needed. Indeed, the entertainment industry in the United States is very successful. In the past ten years, movie ticket sales have grown by more than $3.5 billion, and over 98 percent of households in the United States have a television set. The government should spend its money elsewhere, as the arts clearly do not need financial assistance.

Instructions

Your professor is teaching a class on sociology. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.

In your response you should do the following:

  • Express and support your opinion.
  • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Doctor Gupta

Imagine that you have just given a presentation to your classmates or coworkers and you want to know how well you performed. Do you prefer to watch recording of your presentation with work by yourself to identify your weakness or have classmates or coworkers who attended your presentation identify your weakness and discuss them with you?

Claire

Our classmates or coworkers come from different backgrounds, so they can evaluate the presentation from different perspectives. Some problems may be overlooked due to our own subjective feelings, but others can provide an objective point of view, pointing out our strengths and weaknesses.

Paul

Receiving feedback from others will make me feel more encouraged and supported, which can motivate me to improve my presentation skills. In addition, by listening to different advice and suggestions, I can develop a more personal and detailed understanding of my areas for improvement.
