Agricultural subsidies are a form of economic aid the government gives to farmers. In the United States, they generally consist of payments to farmers for each unit of the agricultural good they produce. Agricultural subsidies are controversial—not everyone agrees that having them is a good idea. In spite of the controversy, we believe that subsidies are a good thing.

First, agricultural subsidies ensure that harvests are plentiful and therefore that food prices remain low. Subsidies motivate farmers to plant as much area as they can because the more crop they produce, the more subsidy payment they receive. So even in years when the harvest is poor per acre, enough crops are produced. The abundant supply of food crops helps to keep market prices of food consistently low, which is a great benefit to consumers in the United States.

Second, the system of subsidies usually results in large surpluses. The surplus is generally bought by the government and sold at low prices in poorer countries. That helps citizens of those countries enormously. Without cheap food made available by subsidized surpluses, those countries would not be able to afford as much food, and world hunger would be a greater problem than it is now.

Third, agricultural subsidies ensure job security for the United States workers employed in agriculture. In the United States, because agricultural subsidies keep the prices of some farm products low, they prevent imported products from taking over the market. If farm subsidies were abolished, the domestic products would become more expensive than the foreign products. That might cause many domestic farms to go out of business and many farm workers to lose their jobs.

People travel for many reasons. Traveling allows people to practice a different language, explore and admire new landscapes, and encounter other cultures. In the past, physical travel was the only practical way to experience the pleasures and benefits of traveling. Today, television and the Internet allow people to experience many aspects of distant places without leaving their homes. Do you believe that exploring places through technology offers many of the same benefits as in – person travel?

Claire

Absolutely, virtual travel offers many benefits of physical travel. Through the Internet and TV, we can immerse ourselves in the sceneries, different cultures, and even pick up language – all from home. It’s eco – friendly, cost – effective, and allows us to better prepare for an actual trip.

Andrew

I don’t believe exploring places through technology offers the same benefits as in – person travel. While virtual tours and online content give a glimpse into different cultures, they fail to fully capture the sights, smells, sounds and feeling of being there physically. It’s only a shallow substitute for the real thing.
