One major concern that the United States health – care system faces is a shortage of primary care doctors. Primary care doctors are the first medical providers that patients go to with new symptoms or concerns. Unlike specialists, primary care doctors are trained to treat a wide variety of medical complaints and are at the forefront of keeping patients healthy. Right now the United States has a shortage of about 20,000 doctors in the primary care field. This significant problem has several causes.

First, medical school is incredibly expensive. By the end of medical school, many students owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans. Although many medical school graduates are attracted to primary care from a medical standpoint, the fact is that primary care doctors earn much less than some specialty doctors, such as radiologists. Many graduates therefore avoid the primary care field for financial reasons: it is more difficult to pay off one’s loans on a lower income.

Second, primary care doctors tend to work longer hours and see many more patients a day than specialists do, with more hours on call and less vacation time. The large workloads and high levels of stress involved in handling so many patients also discourage many new doctors from going into primary care.

Third, even the opportunities to train in primary care appear to be quite limited. All medical school graduates in the United States have to complete three years of hospital training, called residency, before they are allowed to practice. However, in many hospitals the number of residency positions for primary care training is so limited that applicants have no choice but to train far away from where they were educated or delay training. Many graduates choose to train in a different medical field rather than deal with such obstacles.

This week, we’ll be exploring the dynamics of entrepreneurship, particularly focusing on whether entrepreneurs should collaborate with family members when starting a business or if it’s preferable to avoid such partnerships. Many entrepreneurs face this dilemma due to the potential benefits of trust and shared vision with family, but also the risks of conflicts and business complications. What are your thoughts on this? Do you believe it’s best for entrepreneurs to start a business with family members?

Claire

I don’t think it’s a good idea for entrepreneurs to go into business with family members. While you may have trust and share the same vision, family members tend to think too much alike. This limits new perspectives and innovation. There’s also a higher risk of conflicts and messy situations arising between relatives that could hurt the business.

Andrew

Working together with family members can really strengthen the family bond and shared goals. My uncle and cousins started a restaurant, and seeing them collaborate with that level of trust and commitment is inspiring. Though conflicts may arise, if you can resolve them, it’ll make the family ties even stronger in the end.
