Most submarines—ships or boats designed to operate underwater—cannot safely descend below certain depths. To explore the deepest parts of the ocean, scientists must use submarines specially designed for that purpose. The first such submarine to reach the deepest point of the ocean, nearly eleven kilometers below the surface, was Trieste in 1960. For Trieste to accomplish its mission safely, the submarine’s designers had to address several challenges of deep – sea exploration.
Water Pressure
One major obstacle to deep – sea exploration is water pressure. The deeper one descends in the ocean, the greater is the water pressure. The surrounding ocean water pushes in forcefully against hollow objects (objects that have air inside) like submarines. A normal submarine that tried to descend to the ocean floor would be crushed by the water pressure. Engineers had to find a way to make Trieste strong enough to withstand the high pressure at the ocean floor.
Communication
Another problem engineers had to solve was arranging communication between Trieste’s crew and mission coordinators back on the surface. In general, communication with submarines is difficult because radio waves do not travel well underwater. Even so, normal submarines can receive at least some communications from the surface because radio waves can penetrate a short distance through water. However, Trieste’s goal was to descend so far below the surface that radio communication would be impossible.
Power Failure
A third issue is that an electrical power failure could leave Trieste’s crew stranded at the bottom of the ocean. Electrical power is vital to a submarine’s functioning; without it, a submarine can become disabled and unable to surface. Because normal submarines do not descend very far, a rescue vehicle can reach them when they become disabled. But if Trieste’s electricity failed many kilometers below the surface of the ocean, rescuers would not be able to reach Trieste. Engineers had to develop a means of ensuring that Trieste’s crew could survive a power failure.

Diversity and inclusion have become crucial considerations for modern workplaces. Employers are increasingly recognizing the value of recruiting individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and genders. However, there is an ongoing debate about potential positive or negative impacts of such recruitment practices while also maintaining gender balance within the workforce. Let me ask you, do you think these recruitment practices mainly bring positive or negative impacts?
Claire
Well, I think diversity recruitment can bring a load of benefits to organizations. It can lead to the creation of a more innovative, adaptable, and creative workforce, as individuals from different backgrounds bring in varying perspectives and experiences.
Paul
In my opinion, recruiting individuals from diverse backgrounds may lead to potential challenges such as cultural differences, misunderstandings, and communication barriers. There may be a lack of understanding about certain taboos or norms, creating friction and hindering effective collaboration within the workforce.
