Driving at high speeds is a major cause of serious car accidents on highways. Traditionally, speed limits on highways have been enforced by police officers in patrol cars, but a new trend is to use speed cameras placed along highways. Speed cameras are devices that detect cars driving above the speed limit and take photographs of the cars’ license plates. The photo serves as proof of a speeding offense, and the car driver automatically gets a speeding ticket and usually has to pay a fine. There are several reasons why speed cameras should become the main method of enforcing speed limits.
First, speed cameras can be very effective at getting drivers to drive more safely. Speed cameras can be placed in many locations along a highway. Drivers see traffic signs warning them about speed cameras and start realizing how many cameras are present. They are thus forced to obey the speed limit for long stretches of highway, and they gradually form the habit of obeying the speed limit at all times, not just when cameras are present.
Furthermore, because speed cameras work automatically and require no human assistance, they effectively replace police officers. This would free up some police officers from having to patrol highways and allow them to focus instead on more important police work.
Lastly, speed cameras can improve the functioning of traffic courts. Traffic courts, operated by local governments, are courts that ensure fair treatment of drivers. Drivers who wish to dispute their speeding tickets can bring their case before the court and get a hearing. Unfortunately, the number of disputed tickets is great, the courts are overwhelmed, and the costs to local governments run high. The photographs of speeding cars taken by the speed cameras provide fair and conclusive evidence that will prevent most disputes.

Local governments have limited budgets to spend on enriching residents’ lives. Supporting arts programs like concerts and museums offers cultural engagement, while funding recreational activities like hiking trails and parks promotes healthy lifestyles. As students who appreciate culture and wellness, let’s discuss whether local funding should support arts programs or recreational activities more. Which do you think better serves the community and why?
Kelly
I think local governments should prioritize spending on outdoor trails and parks rather than arts programs like museums and concerts. More people would use and benefit from improved recreation spaces than arts venues if fewer residents are interested in the arts, they won’t attend museums or concerts even if government funds them.
Andrew
I believe local governments should actually prioritize spending on arts programs like museums and concerts rather than recreation. Precisely because fewer residents are inherently interested in the arts, public funding is essential to sustain these cultural institutions for the minority who appreciate them. Without support, access to the arts will decline and society will lose these enriching, enduring outlets for creative expression.
